Position Overview
Longhorn Council, Scouting America seeks a strategic, mission-driven leader to serve as Deputy Scout Executive—a key executive role responsible for driving growth, operational excellence, and leadership development across the Council. The Deputy Scout Executive collaborates closely with the Scout Executive, Leadership Team, and senior volunteers to implement the council’s strategic roadmap as well as shape the future of Scouting in North and Central Texas.
We are looking for a visionary and collaborative leader who can empower staff, engage volunteers, and expand Scouting’s reach through innovation, accountability, and deep community connection. This role plays a critical part in both traditional Scouting growth and non-member outreach through unique platforms such as Camp Tahuaya – A Family Adventure Campground.
Responsibilities
- Membership Growth & Engagement
- Partner with the Council Membership Chair and Field Directors to drive youth recruitment and family engagement.
- Develop and lead council-wide membership strategies, supporting districts with tools, resources, and best practices.
- Monitor trends and innovate to reach new communities and retain current members.
- Program Excellence & Unit Support
- Collaborate with the Council Commissioner, Program Operations Cabinet, and Mission Connection Committee to ensure consistent, high-quality programming across all units.
- Guide council program staff and districts in implementing the Program Playbook and delivering engaging, mission-aligned experiences.
- Champion unit health, including charter partner engagement, advancement tracking, and recharter success.
- Expand program offerings through facilities like Camp Tahuaya, Worth Ranch, and Sid Richardson Scout Ranch, supporting both traditional Scouting and innovative outdoor experiences for non-members.
- Leadership Development & Team Empowerment
- Lead, coach, and inspire a team of middle managers and field staff to achieve operational excellence.
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, innovation, and people development within the professional team.
- Support hiring and onboarding of new staff and step in with direct leadership during transitional periods.
- Strategic Alignment & Organizational Impact
- Align field operations with the Council’s strategic plan, ensuring all initiatives support long-term growth and sustainability.
- Leverage data and performance metrics to drive continuous improvement and innovation.
- Support development and fundraising efforts through strategic visibility and relationship-building.
- Community Engagement & External Partnerships
- Represent the Council with educational partners, chartered partners, civic organizations, and faith-based groups to strengthen Scouting’s presence.
- Ensure Scouting remains visible, inclusive, and relevant in diverse communities across the Council territory.
- Support new unit development and cultivate long-term relationships with external stakeholders.
- District Performance & Goal Execution
- Take ownership of district-level performance, ensuring alignment with Council priorities.
- Drive membership, program delivery, volunteer engagement, and fundraising within each district.
- Ensure field teams are resourced, supported, and held accountable for district success.
- Outdoor Experience & Non-Member Growth at Camp Tahuaya
- Leverage Camp Tahuaya – A Family Adventure Campground as a key platform for non-member engagement, outdoor education, community impact, and revenue generation
- Collaborate with program, operations, and marketing teams to drive visitation, revenue, and positive guest experiences for families and groups outside of traditional Scouting.
- Position Camp Tahuaya as a mission-aligned, revenue-generating destination that introduces new audiences to Scouting values through outdoor adventure.
- Promote inclusive, accessible outdoor opportunities that reflect the values of Scouting while expanding its public visibility and appeal.
Education
- Must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university (a transcript with the date degree conferred stated is required for employment).
Qualifications
- Proven experience in nonprofit leadership, strategic operations, or Scouting field service.
- 10+ years of experience in council operations across multiple councils.
- 3+ years in a leadership role supervising professional staff.
- Demonstrated success in team development, program execution, and community engagement.
- Knowledge of Scoutreach growth initiatives.
- Ability to lead through complexity, mentor staff, and deliver measurable outcomes.
- Experience in staff accountability, goal execution, and performance management.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and data-informed decision-making skills.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment (“Jungle Fed mentality”).
- A deep commitment to the mission and values of Scouting, with a passion for youth development and outdoor experiences.
- Ability to travel up to 50% and work evenings/weekends as needed.

The Longhorn Council reimburses cell phone expenses $75 per month and business mileage at $.70 a mile monthly (or the current IRS rate). Additionally, a generous vacation policy and twelve holiday observances in offered.
Salary or Salary Range: $100,000 – $115,000 based on experience and qualifications.
