Student Hourly – FAST Research Assistant Job Overview
Position Overview
FAST Geophysics Program: Assist Dr. Blair Schneider with geophysical research.
Hours Per Week: Up to 20 hours during the academic year and up to 40 hours during breaks and summer.
Job Description
75% – Assist with geophysical data collection at field sites, including ground-penetrating radar, magnetometry, GPS, pedestrian surveys, and electrical methods.
25% – Process geophysical data and produce figures for publication.
Required Qualifications
- Coursework in archaeology, physics or geology.
- Clear communication skills as evidenced by application materials.
- Proficiency using Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint as evidenced by application materials.
- Must have a current driver’s license for operation of state vehicle.
- Evidenced ability to perform physical tasks of the job duties, either with or without reasonable accommodation, to include but not limited to:
- Stand, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
- Walk distances of 1 mile while carrying or pushing equipment.
- Frequently lift and move up to 20 pounds.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience collecting geophysics data, including magnetometry, ground-penetrating radar, and electrical resistivity as evidenced by application materials.
- Experience creating maps and processing geophysics data as evidenced by application materials.
Position Requirements
During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: (1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or (2) be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or (3) be enrolled in summer session or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).
Employment Conditions
- Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by the unit leadership and HR.
- This is an hourly/non-exempt position. A student employee cannot hold an hourly/non-exempt position and a salaried/exempt graduate or undergraduate position (GRA/GTA/GA/RUA/RGA) concurrently.
