About The Role
The Payroll Specialist I plays a vital operational role within the Sonoco organization, primarily responsible for processing and supporting payroll functions for the company’s US and Canadian operations. This position is part of the growing Sonoco Services (S2) team and offers an excellent opportunity for individuals seeking to develop their careers within a dynamic, global environment. The role involves ensuring the accurate and timely processing of payroll for hourly and salaried employees, supporting payroll-related projects, and maintaining compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. The Payroll Specialist I will collaborate with internal teams and external auditors, contribute to process improvements, and handle sensitive employee information with confidentiality. This position is based in Hartsville, SC, with a hybrid work model and consideration for remote applicants.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree preferred, with majors in business administration, accounting, finance, or human resources
- 2-3 years of payroll processing experience
- Strong technical aptitude and ability to learn multiple disciplines and technologies
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel and Teams
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills
- Ability to research and interpret federal and state regulations for the US and Canada
- Experience with payroll systems such as Workday and UKG (preferred)
- Certifications such as FPC or CPP are a plus
Responsibilities
- Ensure the timely and accurate processing of payroll for Sonoco’s US and Canadian employees
- Participate in process improvement initiatives, focusing on automating and optimizing Workday payroll processes
- Investigate payroll discrepancies, identify root causes, and implement corrective and preventative actions
- Conduct proactive audits to verify data accuracy and compliance with SOX controls
- Manage distribution of confidential payroll information to internal teams and external auditors, such as PWC
- Research and interpret applicable federal, state, and provincial regulations affecting payroll processing
- Resolve pay issues, including handling garnishments and employee case management, balancing employee needs with company policies and legal requirements
- Support payroll-related projects and perform other duties as assigned
